Wild Card

July 5, 2008

We had a Wild Card today and decided to lay over in Montpelier, Idaho. We are at the Allinger Park, where we have a grassy campsite with trees to provide shade and stalls for the horses and mules. The students slept in this morning and then did their laundry. After lunch we had a tour of the California-Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (Thank you Becky Smith) followed by swimming at the local pool. Some of the students took naps under the big trees.

Kim Merchant, who has the nickname "Banjo," began playing late in the afternoon and Ranger Jane, our Forest Service representative who is traveling with us, got a guitar and joined in. For supper we had taco salad and then Brian and some of the other students made homemade chocolate ice cream.

It was so nice to see the blog updated today. Wow! What an amazing adventure. I bet Candace was itching to join in with her fiddle. I bet the emigrants were ready for a rest day. Wow! Is this their first shower? I wish you could post more pictures. I can't wait to read their journals and see the film.

What a great time! I bet the kids were ready for a little R and R. It makes me think about the daily push forward that the original pioneers had in order to make it all the way to Oregon before the heave snow set in. Oh, cool, campfire music, taco salad and homemade ice cream that is living large!
Happy Trails!

Thanks to all the "Dreamers" who helped me stir up the homemade ice cream! I thought Mike & Andrew would fight over the beater but the big spoon was there to lick too so there was no battle! We saved the last cup full for Lincoln who was pretty happy to finish it up. The music beside my horse trailer was grand and the stars were sure sparklin' above us as if happy to hear the songs. The heat was nasty but we have all come a long ways in becoming a true wagon train family. What a bunch of wonderful, talented kids!
Happy trails
